REVIEW DWELE | SKETCHES OF A MAN | RT MUSIC GROUP/KOCH RECORDS With his highly anticipated RT Music Group/KOCH Records debut, Sketches of a Man, soul singer, songwriter and producer Dwele (pronounced dweh-lay) returns to the fore. The Detroit-based artist first made a name for himself with a demo called Rize, which led to one of the hippest HipHop Soul collaborations of all-time Slum Village's "Tainted." Subsequent work followed with Roy Ayers, Boney James and Earth Wind & Fire to #1 singles such as Common's Grammy-nominated "The People" and Kanye West's single "Flashing Lights" from the Grammy-nominated album Graduation. His solo albums Subject (2003) and Some Kinda... (2005) continued to demonstrate his ingrained respect for soul music and penchant for jazz-influenced classics. Sketches of a Man finds Dwele writing, producing, arranging and playing all instruments on nearly all of the tracks on the project. The soulful single "I'm Cheatin'" is a mind bender that tells of a man who loves his girlfriend's conservative side as well as her carefree side and dreams of cheating on one with the other as if they were two different people. "It's based on a true story that I put a spin on. Unless you really pay attention, you might get the wrong idea," Dwele admits. He shows us his HipHop side on with tracks like "Body Rock," the Nottz (Snoop and R. Kelly's "That's That") produced "A Few Reasons" and funky ballads like "Open Your Eyes" (a Bobby Caldwell cover) and "Love Ultra," but doesn't stray too far from the soulful roots that we love on tracks like "Vain." "With my music I try to touch on things that everyone can relate to. Things like, being a musician and trying to find the balance between work and love." Thus the impeccable balance of musical elements on Dwele's masterful new offering, Sketches of a Man.
