"How
can you lose your song when you've sung it so long?
How can you forget your dance when that dance is all you've ever
had?
It must be true; you can't separate the two. It's impossible
to do, just like the salt that's in the stew. It's all a part
of you.
One thing that life can't do; it can't take your song from you."
- Lizz Wright (Salt).
Above, are words from the song Salt, off of Lizz's debut album,
released in 2003
by the same title.
Although the words still ring true, she has managed to follow her
freshman success with a delectably divergent sophomore masterpiece.
"Dreaming Wide Awake", takes you on a musical journey, and
tells a sweet, soulful story throughout (much like "Salt"
did), but it seems to add more layers and depth to a young phenom
who continues to prove that music, like fine wine, continues to
grow, change, and in the case of the "greats" get better with time.
Previous fans, and newfound followers will love this new offering
from a gifted singer who's beautiful spirit comes through not only
in her music, but everytime she opens her mouth.
Comparisons abound, but if you don't "get it" after listening to the
sampler below, or the interview . . .
If you like . . . Sade, India Arie, Anita Baker, Cassandra
Wilson,
Lalah Hathaway, or any soulful singer too talented to categorize
. . .
